Detective is the highest level of AKC Scent Work Competition. There is a large indoor/ outdoor search area, unlimited distractions, and an unknown number of hides that might be anywhere. At the PBGV National Specialty, Alice earned her first qualifying score in detective after a few “almosts”. If you watch all the way through you’ll see me agonize over whether to call the last hide, although Alice made it pretty clear that I should. The “last hide” decision has not always worked for us in the past!
There were 7 hides in total. We had ten minutes to complete the search with no 30 second warning given at the end. You’ll see me check the timer on my watch during the search. We used most of the time, but I wanted to be thorough and this choice paid off for us. The camera angle isn’t always perfect because I was wearing the GoPro, but I think this gives you the idea.
